College football fans know the feeling of checking the clock. The game feels long. The crowd starts to thin. Maryland is trying to fix this with a cash prize. The university is offering one student a full semester of free tuition. The only catch? You must stay until the fourth quarter.

This deal targets the spring 2027 term. The winner gets the value of in-state tuition, which is $5,507.50. Per ESPN, the school will cover that exact amount for the lucky winner. Students need to scan a ticket at the gate and then scan a QR code on the video board. The raffle happens right before the final quarter starts. Five finalists will stand on the field. One name will be drawn.

A Rough Season for the Terrapins

The timing of this promotion is hard to miss. Maryland is in the middle of a bad stretch. The team has lost five games in a row. This streak led to the firing of head coach Mike Locksley last week. The Terps now sit at 2-5 on the season. They have lost twelve straight games in the Big Ten conference. The last Big 10 win came back in September 2025 against Wisconsin.

Attendance numbers show the struggle. This year, four home games drew an average of 42,264 fans per match for the team. That rank is 15th out of 18 teams in the Big Ten. The fans are tired of the losses. The school knows this. They need to get bodies in the seats for the game against Illinois on Saturday. The promotion is a way to keep students from leaving early.

Marketing or Desperation?

Officials say this plan was not made because of the bad season. Fan development and marketing fall under the supervision of assistant athletic director Rachel Palmer. According to reports, the concept originated during the summer months. She explained the shift in strategy to local reporters. “We’ve tried a lot of things over the years, raffling off premium giveaways, contests and ultimately landed on this idea of a tuition raffle,” she told the local station about the effort to keep students in their seats through the end of the game.

Palmer also noted that student attendance is a wider issue. Her point is simple. Students have many things to do. A long game is hard to sit through when the team is losing. The school wants to make sure staying for all four quarters is a higher priority. The prize is a big motivator for that choice.

It is a smart move for the school budget. That is less than the cost of a full marketing campaign. It gets the students to stay. It gives them a reason to cheer even when the team plays poorly. The school gets a better crowd. The student gets a free semester. It is a fair trade.

The game against Illinois is set for this Saturday. The team needs a win to stop the bleeding. They have not won a conference game since September 2025.
